Travel Information
Batanes, located 200km off the northernmost tip of the Philippines, will evoke in you the feeling that you have landed in the country’s last frontier. Coined as the New Zealand of the Philippines, Batanes’ rolling hills, unrivaled hospitality and rich culture all add to the unique charm of this island province.

The slow way of life that envelopes these time-forgotten islands, combined with the energy that stem from the winds and the waves of the ocean truly make this place otherworldly.

What to Try

Take a boat ride to Sabtang Island and get a taste of the coconut crab, a famous local delicacy. Take a shot at some honesty at the Honesty Coffee Shop, an unsupervised café where a clear jar is left on the counter for the guests to leave their payments and get their own change for the snacks and other items that they purchase.

Attractions

Marvel at the breathtaking view from the Sabtang lighthouse. Tour the Sabtang communities to see their unique architecture: typhoon-proof stone houses thatched with cogon grass. Witness the unparalleled kindness and sincerity that are so common among the locals.

The newly-erected Tukon chapel is breathtaking with its stained-glass windows, hand-painted ceiling decorations and pews made out of recycled hardwood. It was just opened to the public when Batanes Representative Florencio Abad's daughter Julia was wed to Andrew Parker on May 3 of 2008.

Pacita Abad art center
, also a memorial foundation, showcases the works of the late artist. Aside from her paintings, her works are unique because of her use of traditional textiles and native materials.

Festivals

Palu-Palo Festival

1st week of August Held every year around the 1st week of August, Basco’s Palu-Palo Festival showcases the life and history of the Batanes natives, the Ivatan. During the festivities, the locals wear clothes made of indigenous materials such as flattened tree barks. This cultural showcase celebrates the Ivatan Tribe’s triumph and determination to fight back Spanish and Dutch colonizers using just arnis sticks (hence the name palu-palo).
