Travel information
Bicol, located on the Southeastern part of Luzon, is home to a diverse range of culturual influences. This vast region of six provinces (Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, Albay, Masbate and Catanduanes) is also home to a wide range of water activities, such as surfing, wakeboarding, scuba diving and whaleshark interactions. With its tourism industry preparing to boom in the future because of the proliferation of both luxury and backpacking destinations, Bicol is definitely a trip that you don’t want to miss out on.
What to try
The best halo-halo in the Bicol region can be found in Tiwi, Albay. Halo-halo is a popular Filipino dessert that is made out of crushed ice, gelatin, milk and various native ingredients topped with ice cream.
It certainly is the best way to cool down from the heat!
In the plankton-rich waters of Donsol, Sorsogon is where you will find the home of the most number of whalesharks you’ll ever find in the world. These silver-spotted creatures, who feed only on plankton and krill, are gentle and playful, making them a delight for humans to interact and play with.
Down in Ogud River, you can rent a boat for 2 hours to cruise along the waters and watch as fireflies dance around the place.
Attractions
In Cagsawa Church Ruins Park, you will find what remains of the Cagsawa Church ever since it was buried beneath the lava of Mt. Mayon’s worst eruption to date. The site offers visitors as insight to the strength of nature’s forces, as they tour around the grounds and survey the rubble that the eruption left behind. The park is set against the background of Mt. Mayon, making it a breathtaking view to behold. Tourists can also shop for souvenirs at craft shops nearby.
Located in the city proper, Legazpi Art Museum showcases many of the city’s relics and the best works of Bicolano artists.
Festivals
Magayon Festival
whole month of May
The month-long Magayon Festival, is the most popular among Albay’s many festivals. It is a tribute to Albay’s mythical maiden, “Daragang Magayon”; beautiful maiden in the local dialect. Events during the festival include street dancing competitions, street parades, pageants, sales and painting contests, to name a few.
