Travel Information
Here is a rapidly growing metropolis whose architecture and culture exhibit China’s unique and beautiful oriental influences. Known as the “Oriental Paris”, Shanghai is known to charm its visitors because of its fusion of Western influence and Chinese traditions.
Attractions
Build during the Ming Dynasty back in 1577, the Yu Yuan Garden or Garden of Contentment was build by a government officer named Pan Yunduan to provide his parents a quiet and tranquil place to spend their time. Despite its 5-acre space , the Yu Yuan Garden provides many unique features such as fountains, gardens and ponds.
Located in Shanghai’s metropolis, Nanjing Road’s 3.4-kilometer stretch of shops, malls, cafes and restaurants make this spot a popular destination for tourists to go on a shopping spree. At night, this road turns into a haven for art-lovers and romantics: open air bars and cafes line the streets, street musicians play fantastic music for passersby and various artwork such as sculptures are occasionally exhibited on the street.
Xintiandi is the place to go if you want to get a glimpse of what ancient and traditional Chinese architecture looked like in this part of the country. Despite the traditional architecture, however, the charm of Xintiandi comes from its unique fusion with modern elements in the building interiors. Restaurants, cafes, boutiques and ornament shops can be found around the complex, making it a very tourist-friendly destination.
The Shanghai Art Museum, originally a racetrack clubhouse in the 1930s, this cultural gem of five stories located in the People’s Square showcases works from local artists, as well as occasional foreign artwork. Shanghai Art Museum’s variety of artworks range from traditional modern old paintings to pop culture mixed media, making it a truly diverse treat for art lovers. Visitors can participate in sketching and painting lessons for a fee. Kathleen 5, an elegant American restaurant, is located on the topmost floor.
